Text:JOHN 17:20-26:

As we look at these verses, we see Jesus praying for His immediate
disciples. In John 17:9, He prayed for the sanctification of His disciples then,
while in John 17:20, He prayed for those that will come later. He also prayed
for believers of that time and now, that we may be one, as the Father and the
Son are one.

Sanctified believers are blessed of the Lord. They are useful and
consecrated to Him.

Below are some of the privileges we get in Christ:
1. Purity
2. Priestly prayer
3. Partnership
4. Preference – God prefers us to all others
5. Protection
6. Progress
7. Paradise, John 17:24

When Jesus Christ was going, He was lifting us up. He prayed and made
adequate preparation for our sanctification. They were saved, sanctified and so
He was able to send them out to witness to others.
Sanctification is the deeper experience that comes after salvation. Why did
He pray for their sanctification.

Sanctification brings:
1. Deeper, inner humility
2. Holiness
3. Honesty
4. Happier home
5. Higher honour
6. Heavenly-mindedness
7. Heavenly hope.

Psalm 24:3-4. Clean hands, Isaiah 1:18. As white as snow – salvation
Psalm 51:6-7. Pure heart, whiter than snow Matt 5:6-8 – sanctification
Ezekiel 36:25-26. Salvation makes our outward life clean, and our inward parts
pure. Acts 15:9; Heb 12:14; I Peter 1:3-5,16

As Christians, we are the brides of Christ and He wants us to be united. II Corinthians
11:2; Ephesians 5:23-32. He gave Himself for the salvation of our souls. Revelation
19:7-8; John 17:20.

1. The Pattern Of The Unity Of The Son With The Father: John 17:21-23

The pattern of the unity of the Father and the Son united as one. So also
Christ wants us to be one in unity, in doctrine, John 5:30, self will is
cancelled when we are sanctified. ch 8:28, the Son through Himself God takes
instruction from the Father before He does anything. He did not seek to
independent. I John 5:7, the trinity are united, no arguments, no dissenting

2. The Picture Of The Unity Of The Son Of The Sanctified In Fellowship: John
17:20-23; Acts 4:32
No argument , disagreement, conflict among us. I Corinthians 1:10, that we
speak the same thing. Ephesians 4:3; Phil 1:27; 2:1-5.

Jesus was in purposeful and profitable unity with the Father, John 17:23;
Romans 8:11; I John 4:12-16. There is Christ in us if we love one another. He
cannot dwell where there is bitterness and anger. Sanctification brings unity.
When there is friction in the body of Christ.

There is no unity when there is:
– Satan’s pride and nature
– Self exaltation
– Sinful criticism
– Negative attitude
– Judgmental spirit.
Transparent and total love brings:
1. Consecration
2. Compassion
3. Cooperation, no private agenda
4. Conciliation, no complain
5. Condescension
6. Compliance
7. Clear, cleansed and concise conscience.

Where there is no sanctification, there is:
1. Conflict
2. Contradiction
3. Contention
4. Corruption
5. Conspiracy
6. Contempt
7. Carnality.
Sanctification brings maximum usefulness, Acts 2:46; 4:24-33; 5:12-14.

1. Intercession for all believers – John 17:20
2. Influence/Impact of the word – John 17: 21
3. Indwelt by His glory – John 17:22
4. Infused by the Godhead – John 17:23
5. Inheritance in heaven – John 17:24
6. Inspired information and revelation – John 17:25
7. Identical love for sanctified, selfless saints – John 17: 26.

The Lord is praying for us, Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25. Even right now, He is
at the right hand side of God, interceding for us. John 3:17; Acts 17:6, we are
the eyes and mouths of Jesus to carry around His message of salvation. Heb
2:10; He is bringing us to glory, II Corinthians 3:18, change from glory to
I John 4:12-13, dwells in us
Heb 13:12-14, heaven
I Peter 1:3-5. Incorruptible inheritance
The disciples knew things that others do not know, John 17:26
Identical love as the love of the Father, John 15:9; 14:20; Galatians 2:20.

— May God Almighty keep our pastor, shepherd, mentor for us
— May we not be hearers alone, but doers of God’s word. May God’s grace keep us
till the end. Amen.
