MBS: Christ’s Supplication For Our Sanctification - John 17:13-19

There are some spectacular things about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He knew: 1. Why He came
2. What He came to do
3. How to do it to please the Father
4. Where to begin and He stayed there
5. Who to engage to work with Him
6. When He would leave, John 17:4

John 17:4,13. All that Jesus taught, preached, commanded, spoke, did were all for one purpose: that the joy of the people might be full. John 16:20-24. When we preach, teach, the concern for the joy of the people must be paramount in our hearts. Jesus wanted the people to have standing, abiding, continuing and great joy, John 15:11. Desire that the sorrow of the people, congregation be turned into joy by your ministrations. Phil 2:2; Psalm 51:12; Isaiah 12:2-3.

When salvation comes into the life of a sinner, something happens in heaven, Luke 10:20; Because of the joy set before Jesus, He endured the cross, Heb 12:2; These things we write unto you that your joy might be full, I John 1:4. Tonight, we are learning so that our joy might be full. Everything Jesus did before and now is to make our joy full.

A. OUR SEPARATION AND PRESERVATION FROM THE WORLD.

1. The True Believer’s Separation From The World. John 17:14,16; 15:18-19. Jesus was happy that the words of life He gave to His disciples had worked in them, and they were genuinely converted. Proverbs 29:27. There is a clear separation between the just and the unjust, they are like oil and water that cannot mix. If evil people, robbers, fraudsters love and hail you, then you are part of them. In the Old Testament, God made a clear demarcation between Israelites and the other nations, Leviticus 20:23-24. We will not copy their style, language, waywardness. vs 26, We will be holy unto the Lord.

Jere 10:1-2. Learn not the way of the heathen: their marriage, naming ceremonies, their bribery and corruption, etc. There should be a marked difference between believers and the people of the world.
Romans 3:19. If we are like the world, we will be guilty and condemned like them.
I John 2:15-17. We are not love the world and the things in the world. To abide forever, we must not do what the world does.

II Peter 2:20-22. There is pollution, dirt, defilement in the world. It is better and safer to steer clear of them.
James 1:21. Pure religion is to keep ourselves unspotted from the world.
James 4:4. Friendship with the world is enmity with God.

2. The Transformed Believers’ Preservation From The World.

There is evil in the world because the devil is the prince of the world. Jesus prayed that we be preserved from the evil of the world. By the will of the Father, Jesus delivered us from the present, evil world, Gal 1:4; the world is crucified unto us and we unto the world 6:14.
II Tim 4:18. The Lord will deliver us from every evil work and preserve us until His heavenly kingdom.

I John 4:3-6. Every spirit that does not believe in Jesus coming into the world is not of God. ch 5:4, I John 4:318-19,21, whosoever is born of God overcomes the world. Whosoever is born of God sins not, but keeps himself and the wicked one touches him not.

B. OUR SANCTIFICATION AND PURITY THROUGH THE WORD. John 17:17,9,20

After our salvation, there is yet another deeper experience called sanctification which Jesus already prayed for. Before sanctification comes salvation, no one starts school from the upper or middle class but from the lowest class.
Things To Consider About Sanctification:

1. His prayer for our sanctification, I Thessalonians 5:23-24

2. The purity through sanctification, Titus 2:14. After salvation, you are pardoned, purchased, after sanctification, you become peculiar, I Thess 4:3-4)

3. The provision for our sanctification: Ephesians 5:25-27; Heb 2:9-11 Chris gave Himself so that we can be saved and sanctified. There are graceless churches where salvation and transformation of life is not preached but the gracious church is not so, they have the grace of God to live holy and righteous. Jesus tasted death for every man that we might have life.

4. The purpose of our sanctification: Hebrews 10:14-17. He takes away our imperfections and make us perfect. Old Testament laws were written on tables of stones, whereas, in the New Testament, Christ sanctifies us, writing His laws boldly on our hearts.

Romans 6:6. The old man, old nature is crucified so that the body of sin might be destroyed and we no longer serve sin. This is sanctification.

5. The price for our sanctification, Heb 13:12-14,20-21.

6. The preparation for our sanctification, Leviticus 20:7-8. For sanctification to take place, we set ourselves apart first, we keep and obey His statutes, then He will sanctify us.
Isaiah 6:1-7. Before this encounter, Isaiah had been saved and fully committed in God’s service, but on seeing the holiness of God, He saw his depravity, cried out for help and he was sanctified. II Cor 7:1. We are to perfect holiness in the fear of God.

7. Our preservation in sanctification. We will be careful to not lose our sanctification. We will carry it everywhere we go, we take it to the offices, homes, market places, to the bus, in the church. Jude vs 21, 24-25. We keep ourselves and God also keeps us. I Peter 1:3-5; I John 2:24. We must keep all the words of God to abide in us.

C. OUR SERVICE AND PARTICIPATION IN HIS WORK. John 17:18a

“as Thou has sent me into the world...” John 20:21. What did the Father send Him to do? ch 4:34. What work did the Father give Him to do?
Luke 5:32. To call sinners to repentance. He has given us this same work to do, 19:10, to seek and save the lost.

I Timothy 1:15. Jesus came into the world to save sinners
II Peter 3:9. God does not wish that any sinner should perish but that they come to repentance, I John 4:9; John 3:16-17.

“... even so send I you” The same compassion, zeal Jesus had we are to have towards sinners. John 20:21; Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16. May all those who hear us be saved and not be damned in Jesus name. Luke 24:45-47.

John 1:29. Jesus the Lamb Of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Acts 3:26. Jesus came to turn people away from their sins to the Saviour. As they believe, eternal life is their portion.

ch 26:16-18. To open their eyes of sinners and turn them from darkness into light.
ch 8:4. The disciples obeyed promptly and went everywhere, preaching the word. vs 26-31, 35. We are not to sit in the sanctuary but to go out and preach the word. As we come across people who have not seen the light of the gospel, we will preach to them, just as Philip did not allow the Ethiopian eunuch pass by, he preached to him and he was saved. ch 11:19,21. As they obeyed, the hand of the Lord was upon them, and a great number believed.
John 17:18.

Prayer:
- May God’s grace be sufficient for us to do all these things. May we win souls into God’s kingdom.
- May God bless, keep and strengthen our father in the Lord for us. May his life be secure. May his anointing never run dry in Jesus name, Amen
