The Faithfulness Of A Christ -Centered Church - Revelations 2:8-11

The post is an excerpt of Monday Bible Study message of General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi on 23/01/2017.

The Faithfulness Of A Christ -Centered Church - Revelations 2:8-11

Smyrna was an ancient city in Greece but the name was changed to Izmir in 1930, and it is now in Turkey.

Revelations 2:8. "And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write... “Christ speaks to the minister, messenger and pastor of the church.
The message was not to an angel in heaven or in glory but to the minister over the church.

Psalm 103:20-22. God expects every minister:
- To be like an angel
- To excel in strength
- To do His commandments
- To hearken (listen) to the word of God, that is, they are not supposed to turn deaf ears to the word of God.

Also, a minister is supposed to be:
- Saved
- Holy, separated from the world
- Obedient
- faithful to God in all things.

Ministers represent Christ, they should be good examples to the members. The members are supposed to follow the good example of leaders as they also follow Christ.

The church is not the building, but the people, the congregation. The church is called out of the evil society and washed in the blood of the Lamb. John 15:18-19.

Every minister must ensure that he is not pastoring a dead, defiled, and worldly church.
John 17:14. The church is not of the world.

History tells us that John wrote the book of Revelations when he was going through serious persecution just as the church. Caesar wanted to be worshipped as God but they would not yield to that. They believed that only Jesus should be worshipped as Lord.

God expects us to be a Christ-centered church, not a world-Satan-superstitious-freedom-centered church, whose foundation, doctrines are Christ-centered, whose goal is to live with Him eternally.

A.  The Perception Of Our Faultless Christ -Revelations 2:8.
Christ describes Himself as the first and the last. He was before any aspect of creation - from eternity to eternity. He is the eternal Son of God, before and after the world, He was, He is, and will ever be. Revelations 1:8.

We must never behave as if our Saviour is weak and powerless, we must know who we are. He is "the Almighty", He cannot fail, He is all-sufficient. 22:13, 16. He is the root and offspring of Jesse, the Bright and Morning Star.

"which was dead and is alive". He was dead but rose up from the dead. Why did He die? I Cor 15:3-4. He died so that we will not perish, so that we live and have victory and justification. Heb 7:25. He ever lives to make intercession for us, and God the Father always answer the prayer of Jesus Christ.

Revelations 2:9. "I know...." Christ knows everything about us. He knows what we will go through and has given us the grace we need to overcome ahead of time.

"thy tribulation, and poverty... " The Smyrna church was poor in local currency, but rich in foreign (Heavenly) currency, that is, they were rich towards God.

James 2:5- Believers, though "poor of this world, but rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom..."

I Corinthians 15:10. The grace of God has been bestowed upon us.

I Timothy 1:14- The grace of God exceedingly abundant with faith and love in Christ Jesus.
II Peters 1:3. Rich in heavenly virtues.

II Corinthians 9:8- Because of the grace of God which abounds towards us, we have all sufficiency in all things.

I Timothy 6:18. We are to be rich in good works, ready to distribute, and willing to communicate.

John 2:23-24. Christ know the heart of people, even those who claim to be what they are not. He knows our heart, He knows the hypocrites, the truthful and the righteous.

B. The Perseverance Of A Faithful Church - Revelations 2:9-10; John 16:33. When going through difficult situations, persecutions, tribulation, trials, etc. we are to be courageous, joyful, lively because great is our reward in heaven. We must know that we are UNSTOPPABLE, UNCONQUERABLE, UNBEATABLE, and UNBENDABLE. This positive attitude defeats the devil very quickly.

We have the power of prayer backed up by faith with which we get all that we need, IN SPITE OF THE RECESSION!

We are admonished to "Fear Not" Jeremiah 15:21, 31:11. Jesus has removed the sharp edge of the sword. "Ten days" connote a short period which means the trials are almost over, we are almost through. We are overcomers. This is the worst time anyone can give up, we are so close to the end of our journey. We are close to victory.

C. The Preservation Of A Fearless Church - Revelations 2:11.

We have the following from our Saviour:

- The Promise: "I will give thee a crown of life", "I will be His God and He shall be my son"

- The Prize: I John 2:14, 4:4, 5:4-5,18. A crown of life which makes us kings and gives us dominion. II Tim 4:7-8, James 1:12. The crown of life, which the Lord has promised to give to them that love Him.

- The Power. Revelations 2:11b

- The Preservation. We "shall not be hurt of the second death, we have overcome hell.

Revelations  21:6-7- We shall "inherit all things"
Romans 8:37 - We are "more than conquerors through Him that love us".

#Prayer:
May God keep us in standing fast Him to the end
May God keep our Pastor, Shepherd, father in the Lord securely for us.

  1. I am interested in getting more details on the point. I would like to see some other notes related to those circumstances as well.
