Christ's Warning Against Corruption And Compromise- Revelation 2:12-17

The post is an excerpt of Monday Bible Study of General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W.F. kumuyi.

Christ, the head of the church sending a message to the leader of the church of Pergamos, the members, the world then, and our own world today. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. What He hated and condemned then He still hates and condemns today.
The minister is seen as an angel of the church. I Corinthians 6:3. Angels obey God's instructions promptly; we should all be obedient because we will ultimately judge the angels.

Ephesians 5:25-27. The leader must know why he is a leader. His duty is to prepare the church holy and glorious, without any spot or wrinkle.

Ephesians 1:4.  We are chosen out of the world, we must be holy and blameless. vs 21-22. God wants us to be holy so He can dwell in us.

Ephesians 3:5. We are His holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.
Ephesians 4:24. We put on the new man.

Ephesians 5:27. We must be holy, without blemish.

Ephesians 6:10. To be able to stand against corruption and compromise, we must be strong in the Lord.

As history tells us, Pergamos was the commercial capital of Asia Minor, the very seat of idol worship. Satan's activities were well grounded, he dwelled there.
Every church is in the world just as a ship is always on water. But when water enters and sinks the ship, it can be as disastrous, just as when the world enters the church it would destroy it.

A.    The Compelling Identification Of Christ. Revelations 2:12
"He which hath the sharp sword with two edges" 1:16. Soldiers carry swords in their hands but Jesus' swords came out of His mouth to execute judgment on backsliders, the corrupt and the compromisers.

Revelations 2:13. "I know thy works... " Jesus knows everything about all the churches. He has insight into everything, about everything, nothing is hidden from Him. Daniel 2:22; Hebrews 4:13.

".....and where thou dwellest." Jesus knows:

1. Our dwelling place and situation

2. Steadfastness: II Timothy 1:13. We hold the doctrines "fast" that is, strongly, not loosely, so we don't lose them. II Timothy 1:14. ..."that good thing" the doctrine, faith and love are all good.

3. Single-mindedness: Revelation 2:13, 3:8. For us to reign with Him, we must first suffer with Him. If we deny Jesus, He also will deny us. Suffering with Him for a short while cannot be compared with the bliss we will enjoy forever. In the presence of politicians, former sin-partners, etc we must maintain our stand.

Luke 16:10 Faithfulness in little things leads to faithfulness in much.

B.     The Corrupting Influence In The Church. Revelations 2:14-16.

As we study about the Pergamos church, we must be mindful of our church too - house fellowship, zone, family. Leaders must never be afraid of their members: to know their spiritual state, point them to heaven, touch, correct them, reprove their corruption and compromise, just as a good doctor will not be afraid to tell his patient the correct diagnosis and remedy for the ailment.

1. The corruption: Revelation 2:14. Setting stumbling blocks on the way of others like Balaam  2:20.

2. The controversy: with as many members as turn blind eyes when others are going the wrong way. Jeremiah 16:11-12. The Lord also has a controversy with us today in the church, are we still the way we used to be?
3. The compromise: teaching them to eat things sacrificed to idols. Acts 15:28. When we compromise, Heaven minds, God minds, Christ minds.
4. The condemnation: Revelation 2:15-16
5. The correction: Repent! Revelation 2:5,3:19; II Peter 3:9.

C. The Crowning Inheritance Of Conquerors. Revelations 2:17; Psalm 81:8.
If we have ear to hear, what will happen? Revelations 2:13-16.
"To him that overvometh... "

 what are we to overcome?
1. The fear of the giants: Numbers 13:30-31. This has kept back from success and victory.

2. The fear of false prophets. Jeremiah 23:9. Overcoming will be difficult when leaders are afraid of false prophets/teachers. Luke 11:21.
3. The forces of evil: Romans 12:17-21
4. The fury and vengeance of the enemy: I John 2:13-14.
5. The fierceness of the wicked. II Peter 2:19
6. The filthiness of corruption.
7. The flesh and the world. I John 5:4.

How do we overcome?
1. By faith
2. By fortitude (courage).
3. By fearlessness: Luke 12:3-4
4. By faithfulness: Revelation 2:10
5. By following Christ day by day, one step at a time.
6. Fighting the good fight of faith. Revelation 2:17. Special, peculiar blessings.

Prayer:
May we be more than conquerors in Jesus name.
For our pastor, more grace, more anointing upon him in Jesus name.
